David Lynch: farewell to a giant
The news came like a hammer… The gigantic director David Lynch passed away this Thursday, January 16, at the age of 78. The news was announced in a press release published on his Facebook page by his family. “It is with great regret that we, his family, announce the passing of the man and artist, David Lynch.“The news was then relayed by all major American media and by AFP. The director, who admitted to having started smoking at the age of 8, confided on X in August 2024 that he suffered from emphysema because of his many years of smoking. He stopped smoking about two years ago.
Obviously, David Lynch is known for his filmography, composed of numerous masterpieces which have left a lasting mark on American cinema, imposing new aesthetic and screenwriting revolutions.. We are thinking in particular of Eraserhead, Elephant Man, Blue Velvet or even Mulholland Drive. He was awarded a Palme d’Or at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival for Sailor et Lula then a Directing Prize for Mulholland Drive at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival. He also had a great influence on popular culture, notably by adapting the novel Dune by Frank Herbert in 1984, thirty-seven years before Denis Villeneuve’s diptych. Among his feats of arms, we must also count the series Twin Peaks and its sequel Twin Peaks: The Returnoften cited among the greatest series on the small screen alongside The Wire et The Sopranos.
In 2022, the legendary director Steven Spielberg gave him the role of John Ford in his autobiography film The Fabelmans. A scene of great symbolic force, considering that Ford was one of Spielberg’s models and served as his mentor, giving him great advice. Following the announcement of his death, thousands of fans paid tribute to him on social networks.

David Lynch was a genius. A real one. An extraordinary artist. Filmmaker, painter, photographer, musician. A humanist, too. A brilliant and funny mind.
He left. But his works remain. Let us bring his works to life and he will be eternal. pic.twitter.com/RKz9YqrBBc

I think that like many film buffs, David Lynch is one of the first directors who left an impression on me, whether I understand his films or not, especially since he himself said with aplomb “it’s all in the film ! “. We will miss him. pic.twitter.com/LboX6rjf3E

We knew about his health problems but it’s really very bad news. David Lynch, it’s a name that has become an adjective because he gave us such a unique and immense work

Huge loss! The death of David Lynch is a very serious blow to the future of modern cinema as he conceived his art. Hallucinated tales, transcendental surrealism, dream life, pure cinema, David’s art has managed to draw the public into the land of wonders. Humor included. A thought.
