Endocrinologist Zukhra Pavlova spoke about the beneficial properties of spicy food, and also named those who need to be careful with its consumption.

According to her, the spiciness of dishes comes from a substance called capsaicin, which stimulates the receptors responsible for recognizing warm food in the mouth. The doctor, citing numerous scientific studies, indicated that spicy food improves mood due to the production of serotonin, reduces appetite, increases energy expenditure and promotes weight loss, and also reduces the risk of developing certain types of gastrointestinal cancer.

However, for some people, spicy foods not only do not bring health benefits, but can also be harmful. Pavlova urged those who have problems with the gastrointestinal tract, for example, ulcerative colitis, gastritis and cholelithiasis, to give up spicy foods. The doctor also included allergy sufferers, people with indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and heartburn in the list of contraindications.

In turn, specialists from the St. Petersburg Rospotrebnadzor listed the negative consequences of the abuse of spicy food, even by healthy people. According to them, it can provoke diseases of the stomach and duodenum or cause heartburn due to increased blood flow and secretion of gastric juice.
