Greco-Danish Prince Michael, a respected historian who stayed in Greece during the years of dictatorship, died on Sunday at the age of 85, media reported. The prince, the last surviving grandson of the murdered Greek monarch George I, died in an Athens hospital, the website of the Kathimerini newspaper reported. He was also the last living great-grandson of the Danish king Christian IX.

Prince Michael, who was born on January 7, 1939 in Rome, grew up in Morocco and Spain after the death of his father in 1940, and later studied in France.
Prince Michael was the only member of the Greek royal family to remain in the country after King Constantine I led a 1967 coup against the colonels who had seized power months earlier. The king went into exile after his act. The dictatorship ended in Greece in 1974.
Prince Michael of the royal Glücksburg dynasty was a cousin of the late Prince Philip and the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of the late British Queen Elizabeth II. He left behind his wife Marina Karella and two daughters – Princess Alexandra and Princess Olga.
After 1970, Prince Michael published dozens of works in which he combined his historical knowledge with literary narrative. In them, he focused on topics ranging from Greece to the former Ottoman Empire. He was also the author of biographies of several members of the ruling dynasties.
