Iran warns Israel that an attack on Lebanon “will have serious consequences”
Any possible Israeli attack on Lebanon will have serious consequences for Israel, the new president of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, said in a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, Iranian state media reported on Monday.
Israeli authorities blame the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah group for a rocket attack that hit a soccer field in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Saturday, killing 12 children and teenagers, and vowed a tough response. Hezbollah has denied any responsibility for the attack, it reports Reuters.
“Any possible Israeli attack on Lebanon will have serious consequences for IsraelPezeshkian was quoted as saying by Iranian state media.
“We are willing to improve our relations with France based on mutual trust,” Pezeshkian added in his conversation with Macron.
Macron spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, the French presidency said, as Paris tries to prevent an escalation of the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
“The State of Israel will not and cannot let this happen. Our answer will come and it will be harsh“, Netanyahu said in a statement on Monday, after visiting Majdal Shams.
