An endangered bird has been spotted in France. This is the Bald Ibis that was seen in the Occitania region. The bird has been considered extinct in Central and Western Europe for 300 years.
Four birds of the endangered species were seen at the end of October in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of the Occitania region. The information sparked numerous debates and attracted the attention of specialists. One of the birds was photographed while on the roof of a house.
“At first, I didn’t believe it (…) There is only one wild colony left, of about a hundred individuals, near us, in Morocco, and around ten individuals in Syria,” explained one of the specialists, according to Le Figaro .
The investigation of ornithologists quickly turned to the reintroduction programs of this species in Europe and especially those carried out in Germany and Austria. This program is based on the reacclimatization to wild life of some birds raised in captivity, the expert said.
