A total of 23 people are in shock and have received medical attention. The police are on the scene, according to whom it was initially a traffic accident and the driver did not run into people on purpose, writes AFP.
There were two people in a car that ran onto the terrace of a bar around 19:30 on the rue Père Lachaise in the 20th arrondissement of Paris. They apparently consumed alcohol and were under the influence of drugs, a police source told Le Parisien. The driver fled, the passenger was arrested by the police, adds the newspaper. Le Figaro writes that the driver crashed precisely because he was drunk.
A waiter at a business about 200 meters from the crash site told AFP the car came at high speed, went into the opposite direction and he then heard a bang. According to him, people ran in all directions, two women helped the wounded and the police arrived very quickly. “They are colleagues, neighbors, people I know. It’s a quiet street, nothing ever happens,” said the waiter.
Four fire trucks and several soldiers from the Sentinelle program, which patrol French streets as part of the prevention of terrorist acts, arrived at the scene of the accident. The Summer Olympics begin in Paris on July 26, and there is an increased emphasis on security throughout the country. During the games, there will be 35,000 policemen and gendarmes on the streets.
