Next year, Nio’s new sub-brand, Firefly, will be introduced in Europe with its first model of the same name. The Chinese brand, known for its sedans and SUVs in the middle or premium categories, is breaking into the compact hatchback segment with the Firefly. This mainly favors those who want a compact yet affordable electric car, but brands like Mini or Smart are less happy about the development.
According to the current situation, the Firefly will debut on the domestic market for the first time in April 2025, while it is expected to arrive in Europe in the third quarter. At last weekend’s presentation, it was said that the European premiere would have taken place earlier, but the introduction of EU punitive tariffs overrode the plans. As about the CnEVPost reported, Li William, the founder and CEO of the brand, revealed only so many specifics about the European distribution that it will probably be in the hands of a local partner who will be responsible for sales in several countries.
The punitive duties – contrary to preliminary expectations – will also affect the pricing of the Firefly. It is not yet known to what extent, in any case, the model will be available in China at a price between 100,000 and 200,000 yuan, i.e. 5.4 million and 10.8 million forints, obviously depending on the equipment. With its price of 148,000 yuan, equivalent to HUF 8 million, the model unveiled at the Canton event falls right in the middle of the specified range.
The Car picture according to his article, one of Firefly’s trademarks will be round and triangular lights, which will be connected by an eye-catching decorative strip, just like on the since-discontinued Honda e. The technical parameters are essentially completely obscure: all that has been revealed is that the compact dimensions and the 9.6-meter turning circle will be ideal for urban cruising, while the automatic parking assistance system provides a helping hand in tight parking spaces.
Practicality and safety were important considerations when designing the Firefly. To this end, a 92-liter storage compartment is hidden under the hood, while the luggage compartment can be expanded to 1,250 liters by folding down the seats. Regarding the upcoming electric car, Nio underlined that 83.4 percent of the body is made of high-strength alloy steel, which ensures torsional rigidity.
The brand statement according to the Nio stood the test of time not only in Chinese but also in European crash tests: it finished with a five-star result in the Euro NCAP test.
