One of the most anticipated games of the year and its 2020 sequel, Microsoft’s Flight Simulator 2024, left practically millions of virtual pilots on the ground this afternoon.
The sequel to FS2024, which has been announced for several months, should become available on Tuesday, November 19th at 17:00 EST. And it is. Available to install on PC and xbox, the installation itself, at 50 gigabytes in size, was fast, but crashed after users launched the game. At first it stopped at 6% and it said that it was installing the language, then it reached 97% on most of them and after a while it said that the game is taking an unusually long time to load and that’s it. The community immediately raised the alarm, as waiting for the game turned into staring at the screen without a single clue as to what was going on. After an hour, Microsoft explained that the servers were overloaded and that users should reset everything and try again. In the next attempt, everything stopped at 0% and said that there were problems with the servers. And so it has remained until now.
The predecessor, Flight Simulator 2020, was released in August 2020 and brought a real little revolution, as it created a virtual world with excellent graphics, combined satellite images from their Bing map with altitude data and created a 3D relief with real surface textures. In a few years, the number of virtual pilots reached 15 million, and the game was continued all the time, and in the end, the larger Slovenian cities were so extremely realistic that one could spend hours wondering where the technology went. In the sequel, which should be working from today (but it is not), they have improved everything and upgraded it with career roles in which you can be a mountain rescuer with a helicopter, a coast guard pilot, a passenger plane pilot, transport the victims from the accident site to the hospital by helicopter and much more. And last but not least, you land in Bovec by plane and go on foot (in the first person) to the nearby peaks as a mountaineer. A real virtual sandbox, actually.
Well, for a few days (or even more) it looks like until Microsoft fixes the issues, nobody will be doing that. Those few lucky ones who managed to launch the game reported that planes, content were missing and if they had already flown, everything stopped or froze – FS2024 is designed to transfer most of the data as a stream from cloud systems.
The sky’s not the limit is FS2024’s tagline, and users have already rewritten it to add “The sky’s not the limit, but servers are.”
The disappointment of the community is, of course, huge – the new Flight Simulator 2024 would have once again collected all the laurels and further blurred the line between the real and the virtual world, but instead found itself on the covers of all major world portals and television networks. Birth problems are not uncommon when launching new games, but Microsoft never dreamed of such a big flop. It is one of the biggest disasters in the modern era of computer games, according to the media around the world. Even Microsto support is apparently in shock, they only managed to publish two short posts on X, so that users have to be patient. Flight Simulator 2024 costs from 60 euros onwards, depending on the number of planes you want to drive.
