A decree forbade the inhabitants of an Italian village to be sick

The Antonio Torchia is prohibited by a decree published by the mayor

catching diseases that require emergency medical assistance.

As part of the decree, residents were also required to “not engage in behavior that could be harmful and avoid household accidents” and “not to leave the house too often, not to travel or play sports, but to rest most of the time “.

Belcastro is located in the Calabria region, one of the poorest regions in Italy.

According to Torchia, the decree was, of course, a “humorous provocation”, but it caused a greater response than the urgent requests for help that he sent to local authorities to draw attention to the shortcomings of the health system.

About half of the village’s 1,200 residents are over 65, and the nearest emergency center is 45 kilometers away, accessible only by a road with a 30km/h speed limit, and the mayor says it poses a greater risk than the disease itself.

The doctor’s office in the village is also open only on weekdays, during working hours.

According to the residents of Belcastro, their leader did the right thing by drawing attention to the problem in this way.
