On Tuesday night, the St. Petersburg telecommunications provider Nodex was practically erased from the Internet by the Ukrainian Cyber Alliance hacker team, which announced on its Telegram channel that they had successfully hacked the Russian company’s network, obtained sensitive documents from it, and deleted all databases and numerous backups.
The hack was literally devastating, which Nodex also confirmed on its VKontakte profile, where at first it could not give even approximate information about when the services would be able to operate again. The company has since successfully restored its core network from the backups, and later managed to get the DHCP servers up and running, so internet access could be restored for customers who restarted their routers. The company’s website is still unavailable at the time of publication of this article.

Cyber attacks like the one above can be considered completely common on both sides since the Russian occupation of Ukraine. This was not the first such scalp for the Ukrainian Cyber Alliance, founded in 2016: last year the organization successfully hacked the parking system of the city of Tver, and in 2023 the Russian bank card network.
Attacks are also common from the other side, in the year the war broke out, in 2022, Russian hackers presumably put Ukrtelecom on two shoulders, and in December 2023 Kyivstar, which has the largest customer base, in response to which the Blackjack Ukrainian group broke into M9com, as a result of which the population of Moscow a significant part of them remained without TV and internet service for long hours.
In order to prevent similar incidents, the local communications regulatory authority, Roskomnadzor, considered temporarily sealing off certain regions from the international Internet. Last year, the organization already carried out the first such tests in some of the regions inhabited by a typically Muslim majority.
