A dietician decides on THE best choice of sushi for health and figure

The figures show that the French are starting to shun sushi. A study by Speak Snacking, the results of which were revealed in 2023 during the Sandwich & Snack Show, revealed that the Japanese specialty had left the top 10 in French preferences.

Today, pizzas, kebabs, paninis and other pad thai have happily dethroned it. However, not everyone turns their back on it: it is not uncommon to note that for those who watch their figure and their health, the Japanese restaurant remains the best option to avoid dishes that are too fatty or too rich.

Raw fish, low in calories and rich in protein or omega-3

The composition of sushi does not lack slimming benefits: raw fish, low in calories and rich in protein or omega-3, vinegared rice, seaweed or white cabbage as an accompaniment. Not enough to explode the calorie addition.

However, it’s all about quantity and choice. “ If you consume a low-calorie food in huge quantities, you will not preserve your figure », recalls Béatrice de Reynal, nutritionist doctor. It is therefore not because we regularly go to a Japanese restaurant that we eliminate the risks of gaining weight. It can therefore be useful to know which sushi are the least risky for your figure and health. And the answer is not surprising.

“We prefer sashimi with very little salty soy sauce”

« If you don’t want to take any risks, you should choose sashimi with very little salty soy sauce. It doesn’t matter the fish. Tuna, mackerel, and salmon, that is to say fatty fish, contain omega-3 which contributes, among other things, to lowering bad cholesterol. Sea bream is the most interesting because it is very low in calories and low in fat. If you want sushi, you can have some in addition to a few sashimi and limit yourself to 3 maximum. Sea bream sushi is one of the leanest », specifies the specialist.

The treacherous food: white rice

The food to watch out for in this type of meal remains white rice. Besides the fact that it contains very few micronutrients (vitamins or minerals), it has a high glycemic index. In other words, a strong capacity to suddenly increase blood sugar levels. Remember that repeated consumption of foods with a high glycemic index can lead to weight gain or type 2 diabetes, among other things. So to limit any risk, the ideal menu is to opt for a seaweed salad, a few sashimi and 3 sushis. With this composition, you will be able to reconcile figure and health.
