The Morrison Hotel, famous for The Doors, was badly damaged in a fire that required the intervention of more than 100 firefighters, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
The Morrison Hotel, a symbol of Los Angeles rock culture, was destroyed in a massive fire. The four-story building, built in 1914, is famous for The Doors’ 1970 album Morrison Hotel, whose cover includes a photo of the band in the hotel lobby.
The fire, which required the intervention of more than 100 firefighters, was difficult to control.
The building was often used by homeless people
Although the building had officially been vacant for over a decade, several people were safely evacuated during the fire.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the building was often used by homeless people as temporary housing. The cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The hotel was bought in 2022 by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, with the aim of being converted into affordable housing. However, the organization faced difficulties in preventing illegal occupation of the building.
Album cover photographer Henry Diltz said the venue was chosen by the band’s keyboardist Ray Manzarek because of the unique atmosphere. For the cover, the band sneaked into the lobby, taking advantage of the employees’ temporary absence.
