A Finnish company squirmed for millions of shipments intended for Estonians

The Finnish haulier managed to squeeze himself into Estonia’s sweet job – hauling giant parts of the wind turbines of Enefit Green’s Sopi-Toots wind farm.

The rules of the European Union protecting local carriers should prevent such cases, but in the end it still turned out that no authority laid a hand on the fact that Sopi-Toots’ large special shipments were done by the machines of the Finnish carrier Silvast. The Estonian hauliers, who had hoped for a big contract and had prepared for it, now had to retrench and sell their machines instead.

“It was known several years in advance that such a project would come to Estonia and that investments would be necessary. We were ready with 3-4 Estonian companies,” said Andres Lampe, manager of Kaarlaid, a special transport company.

A sweet opportunity that is easy to miss

The construction of wind farms, which is gaining momentum in Estonia, also provides a sweet opportunity for special transport carriers who transport giant wind turbines to the parks. Enefit Green’s Sopi-Toots wind farm, where parts of 38 wind turbines were transported, of which, for example, the wind blade length is 80 meters, would have been especially sweet for the transporters here.

Estonian carriers knew how to prepare for this work. So, for example, Kaarlaid invested approximately 4 million euros in new machines, also looking ahead to possible future projects.
