A flexible and lightweight structure designed by Renault and the CEA to revolutionize the automobile industry

Still in the prototyping stage and manufactured in one piece using 3D printing, it combines several layers of material. Flexible, lighter than current solutions and less material-intensive, it could replace seat foam or be used in dashboards and headrests.

A solution that remains to be industrialized

“The special thing about this object is that you can play with each component,” highlights Éric Brin, the project leader, who imagines, for example, custom-made seats adapted to a body shape. The solution still needs to be industrialized, while the manufacture of a part currently takes a week. Then, the durability of the structure needs to be tested in a real situation in order to test its endurance, its ability to return to its initial shape and its aging.
