A tanker is floating in the Baltic Sea north of the German island of Rügen, which is now uncontrollable. According to the federal agency that deals with accidents at sea, the ship has 99,000 tons of oil on board. The DPA agency stated that the Eventin tanker is apparently part of the so-called Russian shadow fleet.
According to the German authorities, oil has not yet leaked from the ship, which is 274 meters long and 48 meters wide, so there is no danger to the environment. Also, the crew of the Panamanian-flagged ship is fine and there is no need to evacuate it. The tanker should now be towed to port. Why it cannot be controlled is not yet clear.
According to the DPA agency, the Eventin tanker was built in 2006 and is on the list of ships of the so-called Russian shadow fleet compiled by the environmental organization Greenpeace. These are aging tankers that Moscow uses only unofficially to circumvent Western sanctions on its oil exports. According to the tracking portal Vesselfinder, the Eventin left the Russian Baltic port of Ust-Luga and was headed for Port Said in Egypt.
In the middle of last October, the oil tanker Annika caught fire near the German shores in the Baltic Sea. The ship was en route between the German ports of Rostock and Travemünde. The fire was extinguished and the ship was towed to the port. At that time, the oil did not leak into the sea.
