A Google Street View image could provide an important clue in a missing person case.
Arelie Garcia, 25, of California, went missing on September 22, 2022. She stopped responding to text messages from her family and failed to show up for work at a local car dealership.
After the authorities were alerted, it was discovered that Arelie had left home at 6:30 in the morning, but was not wearing her usual work clothes. She had to be at work at 7:30 and texted her sister Veronica to say “good morning.”
“Good morning. I miss you and my little one. I love you!” Arelie wrote, referring to Veronica’s son, Davian (who is also Arelie’s son).
Since she didn’t make it to work, the team contacted Eli Mendoza, Arelia’s other sister, to say they were worried. The sisters tried texting and calling Arelie, but realized their messages weren’t being delivered.
Could a Google Street View Image Solve a Missing Case?
But in an incredible twist, a Google Street View image has now given police clues as to what might have happened that morning. The system took a photo the day Arelie went missing, showing her red Honda abandoned on the coast. Police believe the image was taken about three hours after the vehicle was left there.
The image was discovered by Veronica, who used the Find My Phone app to locate Arelia’s device. The car was found locked, but Arelia’s phone, keys and wallet were inside.
But Arelia was nowhere to be found. After the discovery, police spent days searching for clues, but failed to find anything significant.
“It’s been like a horror movie since it happened. It’s like a nightmare,” Veronica said.
Where was the car last seen before it was abandoned?
Meanwhile, Detective Constable Arras Wilson added: “We searched basically 6 kilometers north of where the car was found and 6 kilometers south. So every bay, every beach, every route, every turn, everything was searched and there was no indication of Arelia’s presence.”
After examining the vehicle, police confirmed that the driver’s seat was pushed further back than Arelie would normally have been.
The family said if he had been on his way to work, he should not have been in the area where the car was found. Although Arelie was supposed to be at work, a second video shows the car driving past a store around 7:30 a.m.; the shop is about 20 minutes from the coast where the car was discovered.
Despite the footage and pictures, the car windows were too dark to see who was inside or if Arelie was alone.
As the search continues, Arelia’s family believes she is still out there somewhere. Unilad writes.
“We believe in our hearts that it’s still out there somewhere, for sure,” Veronica said.
