A huge column with the figure of Peter I will be installed in St. Petersburg

A “Triumphal Pillar in honor of Russia’s victory in the Northern War” will be installed at the Lakhta Center in St. Petersburg. The decree on the installation of a column 82 meters high was signed by Governor Alexander Beglov, reported in the press service of Smolny. It will be higher than the Alexandria Pillar from Palace Square, whose height is 47.5 meters.

Some experts believe that such a pillar at the Lakhta Center is unlikely to look harmonious.

Medallions with bas-reliefs and inscriptions telling about the key events of the Northern War will be installed on the column and granite pedestal.

The idea of this monument is not new; the installation of the column was discussed by the city planning council back in November 2023. If the architects then generally praised the pillar itself, then the question of how well the location was chosen raised doubts.

There were opinions that such a pillar at the Lakhta Center would hardly look harmonious. Now the decision has been finally made.

The authors of the project, architect Mikhail Mamoshin and sculptor Stepan Mokrousov-Guglielmi, based their project on the classics – the famous column on Dvortsovaya.

The pillar will be crowned with a bronze figure of Emperor Peter I. He will be in the suit of the Preobrazhensky Regiment, boots and with a map of Russia in his left hand.

The Northern War (1700-1721) is one of the longest wars in Russian history. It radically changed the balance of power in the Baltic region, weakening Sweden’s influence and strengthening Russia’s position.

As a result of the Peace of Nystadt, Russia annexed vast lands on the Baltic coast and became the leading power in Eastern Europe. At different periods, Denmark, Saxony, England, Hanover, Holland, Prussia, and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth also took part in the war.
