A humanoid robot sorted laundry at Europe’s biggest tech event

Digit, a humanoid robot built by the American company Agility Robotics and presented at the Web Summit in Lisbon, demonstrated how far artificial intelligence has come in just a few years. It responds to voice commands to sort the laundry and put it in a basket, The Guardian reports.

The demonstration was not without problems, but the audience’s enthusiastic response reflected the excitement about artificial intelligence that has dominated Europe’s biggest annual technology conference.

Digit, who analyzed different shades of clothing and sorted them into categories, was met with shouts of encouragement. The robot has flat, spatula-shaped hands designed to grab and move boxes through warehouses, while its legs appear to be fixed in reverse to avoid hitting things (or people) when it bends to pick up objects , according to Tech Informed.

Digit can go where people go

Digit doesn’t have wheels, but legs so it can climb stairs and walk where people go, and the height of the robot is similar to that of a human.

However, the demonstration also sparked discussions on topics such as safety, jobs and the climate, as AI begins to influence a wide range of industries.
