A Hungarian photographer brought the Artemis mission to life – a technocrat

Detailed and spectacular images of the LEGO® NASA Artemis space launch system made with the toy photography technique pay tribute to the Artemis program.

The Artemis program aims to send the first woman and the next man to the Moon by 2026, creating a permanent base there that will support future missions to Mars. The first unmanned test flight of Artemis in space and around the Moon took place in 2022, among other things, the footage of this mission inspired photographer Benedek Lampert, who recreated the launch of the rocket and the flight of the Orion spacecraft around the Moon at an old airport.

The biggest challenge for the image showing the launch was to reproduce the smoke from the engine. I knew I was going to use cotton balls, but then I had to find the position so that when lit, the cotton would have the exact same effect as in real life. I used not only a flash, but also a bright, small lamp. I put an orange color filter on it, this is where the right side of the smoke got the intense “fiery” effect”

said the photographer.

The Orion spacecraft’s orbit around the Moon also posed many questions for Lampert, who first wanted to put some engine light behind the module for a more spectacular image, but then, based on video simulations, it turned out that the engines are no longer ignited in orbit around the Moon, since here the gravitational force of the celestial body does the work and keeps the module in orbit.

The toy photographer often pushes the limits of his creativity and technical knowledge with his photos, he always builds the scenery himself and tries to achieve the desired effect with the least amount of post-production work. His main inspiration for this project was the significance and excitement of the Artemis program, humanity’s next big step in the conquest of outer space.
