A journalist from the Italian newspaper ‘The print’ He was attacked by far-right militants, who beat him when he tried to document a meeting in front of a venue frequented by far-right sympathisers in Turin (north), according to this Sunday’s newspaper.
The incident, which is already being investigated by the police, occurred on Saturday night, when some militants from the neo-fascist group Casa Pound were celebrating a party outside the premises, they approached the journalist, Andrea Joly, who was filming with his mobile phone, and asked him: “Are you one of us?”
The attackers then ordered him to hand over his mobile phone, threatened him and assaulted him, even as he was walking away, when he fell to the ground and they kicked him, forcing the journalist to receive medical treatment in hospital, according to the same sources.
Agents from the General Investigations and Special Operations Division (Digos) are investigating what happened, analyzing the images to try to identify the perpetrators of the attack.
Turin Mayor Stefano Lo Russo expressed his solidarity with the journalist because “press freedom is a fundamental pillar of democracy and any attack on those who exercise the right to inform is an attack on democratic values themselves.”
“Episodes of violence and vile aggression such as this, for which I hope those responsible will be determined as soon as possible, must have no place in our city. They cannot be tolerated at all and must be firmly condemned by all political forces,” he added.
