“A crime, not a tragedy”: A large number of Belgraders are protesting the accident in Novi Sad
A large number of people today gathered at the Sava square in Belgrade, and then went to the Ministry of Construction, as a sign of protest about the accident in Novi Sad and the situation in which the whole society is. In front of the Ministry of Construction, they showed their red-painted hands to the policemen who did not allow them to approach the building and called each of them by their last names, asking them “if there is anyone honest enough to arrest those responsible for the tragedy in Novi Sad”.
They carry the slogans “Crime, not tragedy”, “Resignations”. The organizers of the protest (SviĆe) invited those gathered to bring red paint and leave their handprints in front of the Serbian Government building.
There are a large number of policemen in front of the Government building, and there is no interaction between the demonstrators and the police.
As the organizers said at the beginning of the protest, the protest is a reaction to the situation in which this entire society finds itself, considering, as they say, how many people died because of someone’s irresponsibility, because of an omission, because of, as they say, corruption.
The protest on Sava Square began with a minute’s silence for the victims in Novi Sad and the reading of the names of 14 people who died when the canopy of the railway station building in Novi Sad collapsed.
After that, the organizers spoke briefly, Ivan Bijelić as well as Mila Pajić from the student organization Sviće.
