A luxury hotel in the middle of the desert is perfect for anyone who hates people

Hotel Folly Mojave is a refuge and escape from the wilderness surrounded by hundreds of square kilometers of natural landscape designed by Los Angeles-based architect Malek Alkadi. Designed by Los Angeles-based multidisciplinary architect Malek Alkadi, the 200-acre wilderness retreat sits at the intersection of the untamed Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park and is a bold architectural statement, inspired by earthy hues, rocky textures, and surreal-like landscapes. Mars.

The property is the latest in hospitality brand Folly’s collection of “solitary accommodations,” which debuted near the town of Joshua Tree in 2018 with a contemporary cabin also designed by Alkadi.

“Folly Mojave feels like a natural, divine space and welcomes guests seeking health, healing and self-reflection,” Alkadi says.

What does the complex look like?

The property features three self-contained apartment structures, which embody the four elements of nature and seem to appear and disappear into the landscape in the harsh daylight. Seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor spaces, the water suite features a king-size bed, well-equipped kitchen, high ceilings, lavish shower, eco-friendly solar panels, top-of-the-line amenities, and an outdoor terrace that doubles as a fully functional bedroom for those interested in at night they observe the Milky Way.

The other two suites – Fire + Stone and Vetar – provide analogous experiences, framing awe-inspiring views through huge windows. Each freestanding structure exudes a raw, monolithic appeal, with dark steel accents punctuating their concrete shells. Reclaimed wood, charred using the ancient Japanese sho sugi ban technique, adds a complementary texture.

Materials in harmony with nature

The choice of materials speaks of the resilience of the desert, of the connection between human ingenuity and the natural world. Solar panels come in the form of trees that are “planted” next to each apartment, increasing energy efficiency, inviting guests to experience innovative technologies first hand.

“Folly Mojave seeks to function as a self-sufficient microgrid, with the sun ruling as the primary energy source—truly decoupled from external utilities,” notes Alkadi.

There is also a fourth external building, the Mara Pavilion, inspired by the Mara Oasis. Designed for a variety of self-care and wellness activities, offerings include movie nights, yoga classes, sound baths and intimate get-togethers. Within the pavilion itself there is a sauna, a steam room, a cold pool and a heated pool, while the therapists can provide a series of holistic spa treatments from a specially prepared menu. And for those looking for a breathtaking desert experience, Folly Mojave has a private outpost just a short drive away that offers campfire and twilight dinners.
