A man was arrested in Bordeaux who allegedly planned an attack during the Olympic Games – World – News

Police in the Bordeaux metropolitan area in the south of France arrested a man who was allegedly planning an attack during the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. This information was confirmed to the Reuters agency on Tuesday by an unnamed source, writes TASR.

The AFP agency, citing its source, said that the detainee is a citizen of the Russian Federation born in 1984. He was detained on suspicion of “organizing events that may lead to destabilization” during the Paris Olympics.

According to the source, authorities have opened criminal proceedings against the Russian for “passing intelligence to a foreign power with the aim of inciting hostilities in France” – a crime punishable in France by up to 30 years in prison.

In a separate statement, the French prosecutor’s office specializing in the fight against terrorism (PNAT) said that an 18-year-old youth was taken into custody in the southern French department of Gironde on Tuesday morning, who was planning to carry out at least one attack on people. However, according to Reuters, the statement does not mention the link to the Paris Olympics

However, the newspaper Le Parisien claimed in its report that the PNAT called the young man radicalized. A police investigation identified the suspect based on messages on social media where he spoke of his desire to commit a violent act – particularly during the Olympics.

France is on high alert for attacks ahead of the Olympics, which will take place in late July and early August. Organizers are most concerned about attacks during the opening ceremony on July 26, which will be held on a six-kilometer stretch of the Seine River. For the first time, the Summer Olympics will officially start outside the main stadium.

Around 45,000 policemen and gendarmes will be watching over the summer Olympics, which the capital of France is hosting for the first time in a century. Around 10,000 soldiers will patrol the streets and other locations in the metropolitan area of Paris and will also participate in other security operations.
