A member of the golden generation from the 2002 World Cup is celebrating his 50th birthday. The year before last he played for Detva – Other – Hockey

Former Slovak hockey player Marek Uram celebrates his 50th anniversary on Sunday, September 8.

In the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 seasons, he won the championship title in the Slovak hockey extra league when he wore the jersey of Slovan Bratislava. After the regular part of the first winning season in the “Whites” jersey, he was the best scorer of the competition with 31 goals.

He participated in two World Cups with the national team, in 2002 he brought home a gold medal from Gothenburg, Sweden.

Uram has had several role models in his life and considers his father as his first.

“Just like every son’s role model is his father, so my father has always been a role model for me. Then, when we watched hockey, my role models were Czechoslovak players such as Vladimír Růžička, Igor Liba, Darius Rusnák and the like.

In 1985, when the WC in hockey was in Prague, I watched the game of the Canadian hockey player Steve Yzerman. That was my great role model. And then there were other top Slovak hockey players, such as Zdeno Cíger and Žigo Pálffy. From childhood we lived through hockey, so the role models were and are in me,” the jubilant Uram confessed in an interview with TASR.

The Slovak hockey forward was born on September 8, 1974 in Liptovský Mikuláš. It was in his hometown that his lifelong hockey journey began.

As a member of MHk 32 Liptovský Mikuláš, he made his first appearance in the Slovak extra league in the 1993/94 season. He defended the colors of his home club until the 1999/2000 season, when he transferred to Znojmo.

In HC JME Znojemští Orli, he created a productive attacking duo with Slovak representative Petr Pucher. Already in the 2000/01 year, thanks to 26 goals, he became the best scorer in the Czech extra league. He stayed at the club until the 2005/06 season, which he did not finish and was not involved in the club’s 3rd place in the Czech extra league.

Uram’s premature termination of his work in Znojmo was adequately compensated by the signing of a three-year contract with Slovan Bratislava. Cooperation with the club brought success for the hockey player working on the left wing with jersey number 79 in the very first season.

In the regular part of the 2006/2007 season, he became the top scorer of the competition with 31 goals and confirmed his offensive skills in the playoffs. He won his first club championship with the Whites.

In the early part of the following year, he established himself primarily as a scorer, scoring 9 goals and 28 assists in 26 matches.

He suffered an injury this season – he damaged the meniscus in his right knee in the match against HC Košice and missed several weeks. This season, Slovan defeated Košice 4:3 in the final of the extra league and defended the championship title.

Uram represented Slovakia at the WC in hockey twice. From the first tournament in 2002 in Gothenburg, Sweden, he brought home a historic title and thus became part of the golden generation of Slovak hockey players.

He played in the second in 2007 in Russia, where the Slovaks took sixth place. He skillfully played 73 matches in the Slovak national team and scored 17 goals.

Naturally, he considers the championship title from Gothenburg to be his greatest success.

“It was something fantastic. Even though I didn’t play the last matches, I participated and it was something amazing. The celebrations after arriving in Bratislava were fantastic. I also highly value the titles at Slovan.

Especially the first one, since the year before Slovan was one of the worst placed in the extra league at that time. We succeeded, especially in the playoffs, which we won 12 times out of 14 games in a row. I really like to remember it, it was a great show.

Also the title celebration at the Trenčín stadium, as Trenčín and Slovan have always been great competitors. I consider this to be the greatest success in my career,” Uram further told TASR.

After finishing his work in Slovan, he transferred to MHC Martin, where he played two seasons (2009/2010 and 2010/2011). After two years of quick club transfers (Liptovský Mikuláš, Znojmo, Nové Zámky or Žilina), Uram landed in his native Liptovský Mikuláš for four seasons.

His last hockey career was for HK Detva in the 2022/2023 season.

“I played hockey professionally for a very long time, until the age of 44. After that I played in the second league. I am with hockey and I would very much like to stay with it. Even now I train 7th and 9th grade hockey in Liptovský Mikuláš.

What hockey gave me, I try to pass on to younger boys and I try to help some players get where they want to go,” he added for TASR at the end.
