In Lambrate, in the eastern area of Milan, Atelierzero firm one 45 square meter micro loft inside a former industrial space. Neutral floors and walls form the backdrop for colorful pieces of furniture, many chosen from among the great design classics, without forgetting details that hark back to the space’s productive past, such as the iron ladder fixed to the wall that allows you to reach the mezzanine with the bed.
«The main challenge was managing the small size and the arrangement of the openings – they say at Atelierzero – The large windows, present only on one side of the apartment, dictated the choice to keep the adjacent space as free as possible, for maximize the entry of natural light in the living area. The main functions have been organised along the side parallel to the windows, creating a well-equipped functional strip». Immediately after the entrance, the lunch areasolved with a round table combined with Thonet chairs, in continuity with the essential linear kitchen. To isolate it, the designers thought of a red tent full height: «Once pulled, it makes the kitchen look like a closed piece of furniture, in dialogue with the adjacent built volume».
This volume is the most interesting design idea of the studio flat: made of brickwork and wood, covered on the front with pleated red travertine slabs which reflect the nearby drapery, it seems like a simple wardrobe but in reality “hides the utility functions and creates a mezzanine, taking advantage of the considerable height of the space; it also contains the kitchen columns and access to a walk-in closet and the bathroom”. Bedroom so it’s there but you can’t see it, like the bathroom, a box completely red to be discovered by going through the “secret hallway”.
