On December 25, a saltwater crocodile tried to cross the Penanjong-Tutong highway when it was run over by an SUV. The large reptile caused serious damage to the car, and it died on the spot, Brunei writes news sources. Fortunately, the driver of the vehicle escaped the incident unharmed.
The unusual sight of a dead crocodile lying on its back on the busy highway quickly caught the attention of motorists who shared numerous photos on social media. That day, several people warned motorists to be more careful on this section.
The Brunei Forestry Department reported that the victim was a 3-meter-long saltwater crocodile that was heading towards the Tutong River when it was struck.
According to a forest official, the reason behind the frequency of such accidents is the rapid urbanization of the river banks. Due to the widening of the water banks and the cutting of mangrove trees, the crocodiles’ habitats and food sources have been significantly reduced, so they are forced to travel.
