A nearly 100-year-old plover has been put up for sale

A hundred years is a long time, even on a human scale, let alone on a truck scale. The ironplanet.comwas recently added to a semi-trailer tractor manufactured in 1927, which means it is almost 100 years old, and which is also blessed with an extremely robust chassis, as it can handle up to tons of shipments. The Scammel brand model does not fully reflect its original condition, as it has undergone some modernization over time.

It originally rolled off the production line with a four-cylinder, 7-liter, 85-horsepower gasoline engine. This block, also made by Scammel, was later replaced by a more powerful and economical resource in the form of the six-cylinder, 112 horsepower, Gardner engine. This power unit was mated to an eight-speed transmission, two of which were reverse. It is interesting that the tractor is equipped with a chain drive. From the side view, the chain is clearly visible, which is stretched around the rear axle and a gear wheel. Essentially, it is responsible for torque transmission. The chain can be found on both the right and left sides.

The cab of the right-hand drive tractor has two benches, in theory up to 2-4 people could travel in it at the same time. His cabin was still entirely made of wood, which was completely common at the time. However, solid rubber wheels were a novelty, so Scammel was able to lead the way in long-distance freight transport with its self-developed tractors.

The Scammel brand, founded in 1920, has now faded from the Hungarian public consciousness, but the Hungarian press occasionally reported on the developments of the English factory even in the 1920s, 1930s, 1960s and 1970s. “The English Scammel– machinery factory giant, 11 round burdencar made, which hundred tons useful weight can to deliver. A vehicle butt replaceable, so need according to less burden deliveredSarah meg it can be to shorten. A governability to facilitate two conductor governs a there isTulsa the with front constant telephone connectionben stands It worked with this a by truck one 82 tons weight locomotive one from a machine factory a Liverpool whileto cooks arithmetic” – the February 4, 1930 issue of Újság announced in 1930. In other words, Scammel already gained recognition in the last century in the field of trucks that can be used to transport special, overweight shipments.

The company operated as part of Leyland Motors from 1955. Despite this, it was able to keep its brand name until 1986. Its fate was sealed when Leyland won a British defense tender for more than a thousand units. After that, the company group was acquired by the Dutch DAF, which then carried out a reorganization and the Scammel factory was closed.

The antique truck is still functional, that is, it could even be used to tow overweight or oversized shipments. It is true that the vehicle does not have a “saddle structure” in today’s sense. On the other hand, it has a pin structure built on the bumper, so it can even function as a “push” saddle. Why it was put up for sale is a mystery, since for a while the British Commercial Vehicle Museum belonged to his collection. After the institution acquired it in 2018, some small repairs were made on it, and then it was put up for auction in 2022. Two years later, anyone can hit on the specialty again. There is no starting price yet.
