Since its publication in 1869, the famous children’s novel Alice in Wonderland has been adapted dozens of timesin all possible and imaginable formats. This year, and to our greatest happiness, the work of Lewis Caroll will once again arrive in the cinema, in a very particular style.
A universal work adapted on multiple occasions
Everyone knows Alice in Wonderland. Even if you haven’t read Lewis Caroll’s novel, chances are you’ve at least seen the Disney adaptation. THE 1951 animated film is still considered — rightly — a masterpiece. It’s also difficult to miss the live action version of the cartoon (even if it’s technically a sequel). Directed by Tim Burton, the film divided criticseven if a whole generation of spectators loves this version. But, did you know that the novel has also been adapted into a TV series, a comic book, video games and even an opera? This year again, Alice in Wonderland will benefit from an adaptation in a previously unpublished style: Japanese anime.
Alice in Wonderland enters the world of Japanese anime
Titled Alice in Wonderland – Dive in Wonderlandthis retelling of the classic work has been officially announced, to the delight of anime fans. If the broadcast date in France has not yet been determinedits release in Japan is scheduled for August 29, 2025. The project is directed by director Toshiya Shinohara, with a screenplay by Yuko Kakihara. Production is handled by the PA Works studio.

A new vision of Lewis Caroll’s timeless novel
In this version ofAlice in Wonderlandthe plot will not focus only on Alice. We will also follow Risea young modern girl who manages to enter Wonderland to meet Alice. This adaptation therefore promises modern interpretation of the talewhile preserving its iconic chaotic and dreamlike atmosphere.
Anime, an ideal medium to recreate the atmosphere of Wonderland
The imaginative world ofAlice in Wonderland East complicated to transcribe in live action. In 2010, Tim Burton’s adaptation received numerous negative reviews regarding the aesthetics of the film. Anime, on the contrary, offers incomparable creative freedom. This category of animation even seems made for this type of work. We can think, for example, of Spirited Awayone of the jewels of Studio Ghibli directed by the immense Hayao Miyazaki. Released in 2001, the film has many similarities with Alice in Wonderland, between the exaggerated expressions, the surreal visuals and, of course, the initiatory and experimental story of their heroine. There is no doubt, therefore, that this version will allow us to feel closest to Lewis Caroll’s descriptions of Wonderland.
