For 28 years, a car dealership in Kentucky (USA) advertised its activities in a truly unique, rather special way: a brand new Dodge Vipert placed on top of the advertising pole in front of their premises. The sports car, which has since become a legend, was recently taken off the pillar to receive the care it deserves, and then it is returned to its place.
Decades in the sky
The 1996 Dodge Viper RT/10 originally topped the chart as a brand new car. An employee of the trade, According to Alec Girvin the car only covered 12 miles before being lifted in 1996. Since then, it has been brought down only once, 15 years ago, for a quick maintenance, washing, polishing and wheel care. It now needs more maintenance and some paint before it can be returned to its post.

Traces of time
The passage of years has left serious marks on the car. UV radiation damaged the red paint, which became almost completely matte, the glass of the headlights became discolored, and the plastic windows were covered with algae, apparently from the inside, due to soaking from the rain. The Viper’s V10, 421-horsepower engine has also taken the wear and tear of the decades: it’s covered in brown deposits and hollows filled with straw indicate that birds have taken refuge in the air intakes.
Myths and reality
Many thought the car was just an empty body concocted by clever marketers, but Girvin says it’s a fully functional Viper that was originally put on a pole new. Although some Facebook commenters speculated that it was a pre-production model that could not be put on the market, this Viper is actually a factory copy.
The location is also clearly visible on Google Street View, with the Viper straddling the top of the column:
The dealership promises the car will soon be back up high and shining in its original glory. This is reassuring…
