The National Institute of Earth Physics announces a new earthquake in Romania, the sixth this year. INFP transmits that the seismic movement occurred in Prahova county, but the earthquake fell into the category of those in the Vrancea seismic zone.

The earthquake had a magnitude of ml 3.4, at a depth of 136.8 km. The earthquake occurred near the following cities: 49km N of Ploiesti, 51km SE of Brasov, 60km NW of Buzau, 60km SE of Sfantu-Gheorghe, 74km NE of Targoviste, 88km SW of Focsani.

The biggest earthquake of 2024

No less than 6 earthquakes occurred this year in Romania, all in the Vrancea seismic zone. Incidentally, today’s was also the strongest of them. On January 4, another earthquake, of 3.2 degrees, occurred in Vrancea, the second in intensity since 2025.

Last year, the strongest earthquake in Romania occurred on September 16, 2024, at 5:40 p.m., in the Vrancea-Buzau area, recalls evz.ro. The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.4 degrees and was felt in Bucharest and Chisinau.

In what year could Romania be hit by a devastating earthquake?

Gheorghe Mărmureanu, the former honorary director of the National Research and Development Institute for Earth Physics (INCDFP), revealed when the next big earthquake will occur in Romania, and what intensity it will have. The famous seismologist wanted to reassure people, claiming that there is no cause for concern in this regard.

“The seismic activity in our country is not likely to worry us and we can see our lives at peace. I would say that it is rather a beneficial one, because any release of tension brings with it a less threat”, said Gheorghe Mărmureanu for Impact.ro.

Gheorghe Mărmureanu stated that the next big earthquake in Romania will take place in about 15 years. According to the seismologist, we should not expect such a disaster earlier than 2039. Also, the specialist specified that the earthquake will be 7.7 or 7.8 degrees on the Richter scale.

“We will not escape a future big earthquake”

“It must be clear to us that we will not escape a future big earthquake. We have a map of strong earthquakes and their history in the last 300 years, on the territory of Romania, based on which we analyze data about this type of threats. According to our research, the next very strong earthquake could hit us around 2039-2040”, said Gheorghe Mărmureanu.

The scientist also explained that great earthquakes hit our country about once every century. However, this is not a rule and we can face unpleasant surprises, as was the terrible earthquake of March 4, 1977.
