A new manufacturer is set to enter Formula 1 from 2026. Cadillac will be the eleventh Formula 1 team.
Formula 1 has announced that it has reached an agreement with General Motors to bring GM/Cadillac to the grid from 2026. Formula 1 management has approved a request from the American group to participate in the pinnacle of motorsport. Thus, from 2026, Formula 1 will have 11 teams on the grid.
In the last year, there have been various rumors related to the entry into Formula 1 of a new team with North American origins. The main candidate was Michael Andretti, who would then enter into a partnership with General Motors, with which to form a new team in F1. Recently, Formula 1 management approved GM’s request to enter Formula 1.
GM will compete in Formula 1 under the Cadillac brand
For the first time since 2016, 11 teams will line up on the Formula 1 grid. Following this announcement came the confirmation that 1978 Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti will be the board director of the Cadillac F1 team. In addition, the American team will benefit from the infrastructure developed by Andretti Global and will have several divisions in the US, but will also operate near the Silverstone circuit, as many Formula 1 teams already do.
The team will use an engine developed by another manufacturer in the first phase, so it remains to be seen who they will turn to. Afterwards, GM will develop its own engine under the new FIA-created guidelines for Formula 1.
“As the pinnacle of motorsport, F1 demands innovation and excellence that pushes the boundaries. It is an honor for General Motors and Cadillac to join the world’s greatest racing series, and we are committed to competing with passion and integrity to promote the sport to racing fans around the world. This is a global milestone for us to demonstrate GM’s engineering expertise and technological advancement to a whole new level,” said Mark Reuss, President of General Motors.
