In 2004, Sony revolutionized video games with the PlayStation Portable, a rival to Nintendo’s portable consoles with the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance, more powerful, which allowed you to play PlayStation games wherever you wanted. A few years later, the PS VITA hit the market. Much more powerful, with quite impressive technologies, the console did not however manage to achieve the hoped-for success. With the rise of mobile gaming and non-existent support from Sony and publishers, the PS VITA ended in failure.
More than ten years later, it seems that Sony is in the process of offering a new “PSP”, fully compatible and capable of running PS5 games.
Sony is developing a new PlayStation Portable
According to a recent report from Bloomberg, Sony is currently considering designing a new portable console. Unlike the PSP and PSVITA, the idea would be to offer a console closely linked to the PS5 and not an independent portable console. Recently, the Japanese manufacturer released the PlayStation Portal, an accessory allowing you to play Remote Play and, more recently, Cloud Gaming.
According to information from Bloomberg, Sony’s new PlayStation Portable would aim to play all the games in the PS5 catalog natively, without necessarily going through Cloud Gaming. Obviously, PlayStation wants to take inspiration from Nintendo’s Switch to release an accessory capable of letting you play your PS5 wherever you are, even without having access to the internet. To put it simply, the objective would be to make the PS5 hybrid like the Switch.
Recently, the success of portable consoles like the Asus ROG Ally or the Stream Deck shows that gamers are finding an interest in playing their PC games in portable mode. With Microsoft eager to enter the market soon, there is a good chance that Sony could also want to take their piece of the pie. Finally, and still according to information from Bloomberg, the idea of this new PlayStation Portable is only in its pre-production phase and the latter should not arrive immediately.
