Good news for fans of Slavic mythology – the first game from a new studio from Poland will debut at the end of the month.
Since the presentation of the official trailer of The Witcher 4 at The Game Awards in mid-December, the emotions of fans of the universe of games inspired by Sapkowski’s prose have not subsided. The new Witcher, set in a quasi-Slavic setting, has been on the market for less than a month, and on the Internet you can find both waves of enthusiasm and voices full of concerns, about which Patryk Łobaza wrote in more detail. However, outraged players who want to revisit the world loosely based on the folklore of our ancestors forget that there is still a lot of time left until the game’s release, and there is nothing to judge based on the trailer alone. Instead, you can redirect your expectations to production, which is also based on Slavic foundations, but is much closer to being in the hands of users. We’re talking about The End of The Sun, a game by a small studio called Sun Team. We will play later this month.
An exploratory adventure game in the world of the Slavs
In fact, we know little about Slavic mythology – mainly due to the lack of writings by the Slavs from pre-Christian times and Christianization itself, which made every effort to ensure that the faith and customs of our ancestors remained forgotten. Nevertheless, mystical rituals, characteristic costumes and a bestiary of Slavic demons warm the imagination of Poles. It is this aspect that the creators of Sun Team, a small Polish studio that is a new player in the gaming industry, want to use in their game.
The End of the Sun is an adventure and exploration game from a first-person perspective, set in the world of Slavic rituals, beliefs and legends. A small village becomes the site of mysterious events in which the line between myth and reality begins to become dangerously blurred.
Their first work is The End of The Sun, an open-world FPP adventure game filled to the brim with Slavic folklore. What’s so special about it? Well, certainly not only the atmosphere itself, but above all, an interesting technique of creating locations.
Between time and space – The End of The Sun is intended to offer realistic locations
The debut work of the Sun Team studio takes the player to a small village, which becomes the arena of strange, almost mythical events. In the Polish production, we will play the role of Żerca, a priest capable of time travel. WITH official website we learn that the player takes on the role of Żerca when he reaches an abandoned village, following the trail of an unusual fugitive – he finds only burning bonfires there, which are the introduction to a series of enigmatic events. The action will revolve around the four largest Slavic holidays, corresponding to the seasons of the year. The game will feature full Polish localization – we will hear not only dubbing, but also a dedicated soundtrack.
As for the gameplay itself, we should expect static gameplay. The player will mainly have to explore the visited locations in search of clues necessary to solve logical puzzles. What is important about the locations themselves is the technique of creating them. The creators focused on photogrammetry, i.e. accurate scanning of buildings and their surroundings in ethnographic museums, thanks to which they managed to obtain quite realistic effects.
Despite this, the latest trailer unfortunately shows that the game will not be a graphical masterpiece – but let’s hope that the production will defend itself with its atmosphere and engaging mechanics. The premiere of The End of The Sun is scheduled for January 29 – the game will be released only on Steam.
