The PSOE of Menorca has demanded this Saturday the “immediate” resignation of the island’s director of the Environment, councillor of the Maó Town Hall and president of the municipal PP, Mateu Aínsa, for having caused various public incidents during the patron saint festivities of Es Castell, including having berated and thrown a glass of pomada -a typical alcoholic drink of the island- at a left-wing sympathiser, as detailed by the newspaper Menorca.infoAínsa has already apologized for these events and expressed its “deep regret and remorse for what happened.”
The Socialists have “strongly” rejected the attitude of the public official, which they have described as “totally unacceptable”. In a publication distributed through ‘X’ -formerly Twitter-, the party has expressed itself in these terms: “We ask for the immediate resignation of Mateu Aínsa and a public apology. We cannot allow irresponsible attitudes and behaviour on the part of public officials in our institutions. They undermine credibility and transparency.”
In this regard, the general secretary of the PSOE in Menorca, Susana Mora, has recalled that “as political leaders, we have the duty to maintain exemplary conduct for citizens”. However, she has asserted that “if these attitudes go against these values - and even more so when you represent an institution and a party – they are so serious” we must “demand, immediately, his resignation”.
For this reason, Mora has demanded the resignation of Mateu Aínsa as island director and as councillor. The socialist leader has specified that, if “this is not done in a free and responsible manner, in accordance with his actions”, they will ask that the president of the Consell de Menorca, Adolfo Vilafranca, “immediately remove him from his posts”. She has also demanded “a public apology to all Menorcans for these actions, which have caused unrest and discomfort among those present”.
Finally, he recalled that “this scandal adds to the numerous problems caused by members of the island government of Adolfo Vilafranca in just one year of government.” “Vilafranca must solve the problems generated by people in his government and must be consistent with the position he holds, which is that of president of the highest island institution,” he concluded.
It is worth remembering that, less than three months after the PP – with the support of Vox – took over the reins of the Consell de Menorca, the controversy was already served: breaking the law and with the presence of some 65 people, the then director of Sustainable Projects and Cooperation of the island institution, Marta Febrer (PP), celebrated her daughter’s birthday party at the Maó lazaretto, a publicly owned infrastructure built in 1793 as a health fortress. Just a few hours after the news broke, the president of the supramunicipal body dismissed Febrer.
For their part, the eco-sovereignty activists of Més per Menorca have requested written explanations from the president of the Consell regarding the “regrettable” events committed by Aínsa, considering his conduct “totally inappropriate and reprehensible”. They say that they expect a response from Adolfo Vilafranca “in line with the seriousness of the events”. Més per Menorca has also sent a message of support to the people affected and asserts that “these displays of hatred are outside any margin of coexistence and democracy, even more serious if they are carried out by a public official”.
In a statement, the PP of Menorca explained this Saturday that Aínsa has already conveyed its apologies to the people involved and has acknowledged that its attitude was not appropriate. The island director has reaffirmed his “commitment to the values of respect and coexistence that must always prevail in the public sphere” and has acknowledged that his role “entails great responsibility, for which reason he has committed himself “to prevent situations like this from happening again in the future.”
