A problem as a driver for creating a useful application mts app contest – an opportunity to find a solution

Nada Mišković is a professor of computer science at Mitrovica High School, where she has been inspiring students to explore the world of modern technologies and develop an entrepreneurial spirit for years. As a mentor of a team that achieved notable success at mts app competitionProfessor Mišković shares her experiences about the importance of this competition and the role of mentors in the process of working with young talents.

Company Telekom Srbija she recently launched a new, 14th cycle of the mts app competition for the development of mobile applications, and Nada talks about her work and the motivation that the competition brings to the participants.

“mts app competition offers a unique opportunity for young people to shape their knowledge through entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial skills into a project. Through project work, students gain valuable self-confidence that motivates them to recognize and take advantage of opportunities in an ever-changing world. This competition properly prepares them for the new, modern currents of society and opens the door to future challenges and professional development,” Professor Mišković points out. When the work with the students began, Nada was impressed by their initiative to recognize a problem in the school and turn it into an application that brings solutions. The “Sylent” team, whose mentor she was, programmed an application that automatically silences the ringing of a mobile phone depending on the user’s location.

“Mentoring work with students started from the students’ idea to solve a problem they themselves noticed at school. After we got together as a team, discussed the problem and chose the technology to solve it, we started with the implementation. The process did not last long, but it was extremely high-quality, because the students learned a lot from the process itself,” explains Nada Mišković. Their efforts were rewarded not only by winning the national, but also the regional competition, which earned the team a trip to Barcelona, to the “Offf” conference, which represents a kind of exhibition of creativity and design in the field of digital and visual arts.

“The visit to the conference in Barcelona as a reward was extremely important for the students, because all the work they had invested in the previous months was recognized. What they experienced and saw there will probably remain etched in their memory for the rest of their lives. The conference was adapted to young generations, where they could hear the experiences of others and meet companies that have gone from idea to big projects. All this gave them additional motivation for further growth and learning in the field of technology,” says the professor.

When asked what advice she would give to future participants of the competition, IT professor Nada Mišković believes that the greatest value of the mts app competition is in the process of learning and gaining experience.

“You should apply for this competition in order to gain experience and learn something new. Victory comes when we are ready for it and when we have mastered all the elements necessary to create the project. I would like as many colleagues and students as possible to go through this process, because it brings valuable experience”, concludes Nada.

The Telekom Srbija company launched the mts app competition in 2011 with the aim of giving talented high school students the opportunity to show their creativity, innovation and entrepreneurial skills through the creation of applications for mobile devices. Students have two months to develop applications that should improve the daily life of users and enrich the way mobile devices are used. The competition includes high schools that work according to a special program of the Ministry of Education for talents in the field of mathematics, informatics and computing.
