The first Škoda Fabia went into serial production on September 14, 1999, and to date, all generations together have recorded almost five million units sold.
In September 1999, the Fabia began to replace the Felicia model on the family hatchback throne. Unlike the Felicia car, the Fabia is built on the VW platform. After 25 years, the fourth generation is currently active and is successfully defending its place. The Fabia model was designed by Belgian-born Dirk van Braeckel, who worked at Škoda Auto from 1993 to 1998, based on a design by Brazilian Raul Pires.
The Fabia made its official debut at the International Motor Show IAA in Frankfurt in September 1999. With external dimensions of 3960 x 1646 x 1451 mm, the hatchback was presented as the successor to the Felicia model, but for the next year and a half, according to market demands, these two models were produced in parallel.
The first generation Fabia model had an innovative design. The result was a completely new model in the Škoda environment, a model that differed from its predecessors in both technology and design. The range included gasoline engines from one to two liters and 1.9 SDI and 1.4 TDI diesel engines.
The Fabia Combi began to be produced in 2000, and the Fabia Sedan the following season. This variant, which was particularly popular in some eastern markets, was eventually produced until 2008. By then, the second generation model had already been introduced (2006). 1,788,063 units of the first generation Fabia model were produced. Fabia III began to be sold ten years ago (2014), and was the first Škoda model that offered customers the option of connecting a smartphone to the car.
The current fourth-generation Fabia model, designed by Oliver Stefani’s team, is current from 2021. Still a 4.1-meter-long hatchback, it continues to find many buyers who appreciate the car’s easy handling, practical dimensions and plenty of interior space, all of which make the car ideal for city driving.
