Few people know that there is a Bangladeshi community in Slovenia. Today they gathered at Prešeren square in Ljubljana and held a public rally in support of student protests in Bangladesh due to disputed quotas in employment in the public sector.
As can be seen from the photos on the social network Facebook, a few dozen people gathered at the monument of France Prešeren with banners expressing solidarity with students in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi community in Slovenia has announced that it will hold the event in support of the reform of the quota system in the employment policy of the Bangladeshi government, which the students have been advocating for during protests that have been ongoing since the beginning of July and have also been marked by violence in recent days. “The Bangladeshi community in Slovenia stands in solidarity with the student protests and condemns the killing of unarmed people… We are deeply concerned about the safety of the lives of protesting students,” the community wrote in the invitation to today’s rally.
Today, the Supreme Court in Bangladesh somewhat relaxed the controversial quotas, according to which more than half of the jobs in the public sector were reserved for certain groups, including the children of war veterans who fought for independence in 1971.
According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, with the latest decision of the Supreme Court, only seven percent of jobs in the public sector will be reserved for certain groups. Of these, five percent of the jobs were supposed to be intended for children of war veterans, while 30 percent were intended for them by a previous ruling of the High Court.
At the same time, the court sent the student protesters back to the lecture halls, but for now they persist in the protests. “We will not end our protests until the government issues an order reflecting our demands,” the main student group that called for the protests said today.
