Michael Schumacher is your son Mick.
It is one of the few glimpses into the family’s privacy since Michael’s serious accident in the Alps in 2013, Metro reports.
Writer Matt Whyman was given unrestricted access to all members of the Mercedes stable during the writing of his book, including Mick Schumacher, who currently works as a reserve driver for the team, Metro reports.
In an interview with the author, the young Schumacher shared previously unshared details from the life of the racing family. “I was a crazy kid. Everything dad did, I had to do,” Mick said.
According to his words, young Schumacher first sat behind the wheel of a go-kart when he was three years old. The desire to race has not left him since then, and his father was sympathetic to his passion.
“Dad was always open to me trying anything I wanted. I enjoyed racing the most,” said the young Schumacher.
The equestrian legend was a great but demanding trainer. “Once in a go-kart race, I braked at the last moment in a corner, which saved me a lot of time. When I told him about it, he said, ‘Yeah, but that’s how you should go through every corner!'” Mick recalled.
When Michael Schumacher got the impression that his son was not taking racing seriously, he quickly brought him back on “the right track”.
“He was saying, ‘Mick, wouldn’t you rather go play football with your friends?’ We don’t have to do all this.” But I insisted that I wanted to race. “Okay, we’ll do it properly,” he told me. So we started doing more go-kart races and I got better,” said Mick.
He was only 14 years old when his father suffered a serious head injury while skiing in 2013. Since then, the son had to build his career on his own.
But the demanding training of the legendary rider gave him a sufficient lead over his competitors. “I learned a lot of technical things from him that I still use today,” the Express newspaper quotes Mick.
Even without his father’s assistance, Mick gradually worked his way into higher categories. He won the Formula 2 championship in 2020. He drove the 2021 and 2022 seasons in the colors of the Haas F1 team. From 2023, he works as a substitute in Mercedes.
