A reader from Pennsylvania returned the book to the library after 51 years

An overdue library book was recently returned to the Benson Memorial Library in Titasville, Pa., but will not be available for loan again. Instead, the book is now on display in the library office, and for good reason.

As reported by the local media, the book Lombardi: Winning is the Only Thing it was last borrowed in 1973 and was supposed to be returned on July 26 of the same year. However, it was only returned this autumn, 51 years later, with a donation covering the potential fine – plus interest.

On its Instagram page, the library shared the news of the return of the book Lombardicalling it “a wonderful surprise that we could never have predicted and a story we will remember forever.”

“It was a huge surprise,” said library executive director Jessica Hilburn. and added: “The staff sent me a message to let me know. We were all delighted.”

The man who borrowed the book more than half a century ago no longer lives in the area, but had visited the library during a stay in Titasville a few weeks earlier. “Out of the goodness of his heart, he returned the book after finding it while going through some things,” Hilburn added.

The library does not reveal the name of the user or the amount of the donation, in order to protect his privacy. A similar case happened this summer at a library in Worcester, Massachusetts, where a book from 1973 was returned after nearly 50 years. There, the fine would be almost $2,000 if late fees were still charged.

Hilburn emphasized how important the user’s donation is. “He could have simply gotten rid of the book and ignored the fine, but his gesture shows his love for the library.” The donation will help cover the library’s operating costs, including the purchase of new materials and subscriptions.

“It was wonderful to share his love of the library,” Hilburn said. “Even 51 years after he last borrowed a book, he still remembers the library and appreciates the services we provide.”
