a recreational pickup at SEMA

This week at the 2024 SEMA Show, the Japanese manufacturer presented the Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf, a concept car inspired by California’s surfing heritage.

Made by the Toyota Motorsports Garage and presented at the 2024 SEMA Show, the Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is inspired by the spirit of the first generation 4Runner, but is based on the all-new generation of 4Runner, with the latest technologies.

A concept inspired by the world of surfing

The Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept is inspired by an iconic era in history: the 1980s, when the Toyota 4Runner became a staple of Southern California beaches, as ideal companion for surfers. This concept car takes the spirit of the first generation of the model to transpose it into the latest generation of 4Runnerrecently launched across the Atlantic.
“The new 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged looks and powerful 4-cylinder engine. I knew it had the potential to become the ultimate beach cruiser”said Marty Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota Motorsports Technical Center: “We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past. The removable roof was a must-have, just like the original, and we made sure it was as functional as it was stylish. »
This 4Runner TRD Surf concept is based on the new 4Runner TRD Limited, equipped with a 2.4-liter iForce turbocharged engine developing 278 horsepower and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota 4Runner TRD Surf Concept: a custom removable roof

Power is transmitted to four wheel drive with a permanent all-wheel drive system, combined with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case. A custom exhaust system allows you to improve the sound of the standard engine.
To go from a four-door SUV to a two-door beach pickup, Toyota Motorsports teams worked on a removable roofdesigned in-house using 3D printing. The interior received soft, waterproof floor covering, as well as a front passenger seat that folds forward, for easier access to the rear seats. The set comes with a personalized surfboard, made especially for the occasion.
The 4Runner TRD Surf concept’s long-travel suspension system features machined aluminum upper and lower A-arms for off-road riding. Improvements have also been made to the steering, custom front axles, as well as the rear bed borrowed from the Toyota Tundra.

There are also 37-inch all-terrain tires, mounted on custom 17-inch rims, with a sporty look.
