A senior Russian diplomat warns the West against fighting “nuclear power” in a speech at the UN

Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister, accused the West of using Ukraine as a tool to try to “defeat” Moscow from a strategic point of view and “prepare Europe to throw itself into this suicidal escapade,” he writes Associated Press.

“I will not talk here about the senselessness and danger of the very idea of trying to fight for victory with a nuclear power, which is Russia,” Lavrov said in his speech at the UN.

The warning issued by the Russian Foreign Minister comes a few days after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Russia’s nuclear doctrine has been revised. This provides for an expansion of the conditions under which nuclear weapons could be used by Moscow.

Among other things, the revised nuclear doctrine stipulates that if Russia is attacked by any country supported by a nuclear-armed nation, Moscow will consider it a joint attack.
