A sharp increase in the viral load of SARS-CoV2 (Covid-19 infection) in Thessaloniki is shown by the measurements in the city’s municipal waste, conducted by the Wastewater Epidemiology Group of AUTH with EYATH, in collaboration with the Region of Central Macedonia, within the framework of the National EODY Network.
According to the AUTH Wastewater Epidemiology Group, although the average weekly increase in the load price from ISO WEEK 27/2024 to week 28/2024 (s.s. impact map of the last two weeks) – as communicated last Wednesday in EODY- was only 24%, the value measured on Monday 7/15/2024 was 66% higher than the immediately previous measurement.

As clarified by the AUTH research team, “such a sharp increase has been observed for some time and if it is confirmed by the measurements in the next few days, it will be a significant increase in the spread of the virus”.
Based on the most recent measurement in the wastewater of Thessaloniki, the doubling rate of loads is every 18 days. With a generation time (average time from infection of an individual until they in turn infect secondary cases) of 2.8 days the active reproduction rate of cases (Rt) is estimated at 1,115. “This wave has been developing slowly since mid-May and Thessaloniki has lagged behind other more touristic regions of the country. Of course, it is not excluded that we will also see sharp increases in the dispersion, as mobility and tourism change significantly as the summer progresses”, it is noted.
