For quite some time now, there have been rumors claiming that Apple will discontinue the iPhone Plus model from next year and replace it with an experimental iPhone 17 Slim. As the name suggests, this should be extremely thin (at least for an iPhone), just as beautiful as Apple’s latest iPad Pro, which is its thinnest tablet ever.
Today, some juicy details about the iPhone 17 Slim were leaked by Ming-Chi Kuo, a longtime mobile industry analyst and purveyor of many Apple-related rumors. It claims that the iPhone Plus currently constitutes only about 5% to 10% of iPhone shipments and that’s why he pulls out the “axe”.
The iPhone 17 Slim will have a 6.6″ screen with a resolution of 1260×2740 and the A19 chip. Its Dynamic Island area will be similar to that of current iPhones, and its metal frame will use a titanium alloy that has a lower percentage of titanium compared to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The iPhone 17 Slim is also said to feature Apple’s advanced 5G chip with long latency and… a single rear camera. That’s a big step back in terms of mobile trends, but Kuo points out that Apple will “emphasize innovative form factor design” with the iPhone 17 Slim “rather than competing on hardware specs.” In other words, looks will be everything through this model.
It’s certainly an interesting bet on Apple’s part, and one that might just pay off – after all, to be successful it only needs to garner about 15% of all new iPhone sales, and that would do it two or three times more successful than the model it replaces.
