Apple won’t make a smart ring

Tom Hale, CEO of Oura, says Apple has no plans to enter the smart ring market. He thinks that the main reason that prevents Apple from making a ring is the fact that such a product could reduce sales of the Apple Watch.

In an interview for CBNC he went on to say that Apple is not convinced of the value of having the ring and watch together. He also thinks that Apple is following competitors such as Oura or Samsung, who have already entered the segment of smart rings. However, Apple itself likely won’t make the ring, as Hale says it’s difficult to get this product category right.

Apple is not developing the ring

Already in October, respected journalist Mark Gurman from the Bloomberg agency commented on the ring from Apple. He indicated that Apple has been exploring the idea of ​​making a smart ring, but the company has no plans for a ring at the moment or in the near future. Even if Apple wanted to enter this segment, it will probably happen in the coming years.

Rumors suggest that Apple is worried about selling the Apple Watch smartwatch. It is the ring that could reduce watch sales, and the company does not want that. The ring and the watch would have a lot of common features and the user could replace the watch with a ring. A team at Apple has reportedly designed a ring to be a cheaper alternative to the Apple Watch. However, according to available information, the company’s management was not interested in that.

Apple even has a patented ring device, leading to rumors of iRing development. However, Apple often patents various kinds of products that ultimately never make it to market.

The competition is ahead

Oura is dominant in the smart ring market. It recently released its 4th generation Oura Ring. The Oura Ring 4 is able to monitor movement, fitness, health, stress level and also monitor sleep. Samsung has also recently entered the smart ring segment. It launched the Galaxy Ring in July. This device works with other Samsung devices and can monitor movement, sleep, heart rate or breathing rate.
