Residents of the city of Alchevsk (LPR), home to just over 107 thousand people, have collected more than 5 million rubles since the beginning of this year for the restoration of St. Nicholas Cathedral, which turns 215 years old in 2024. About this TASS reported at the Alchevsk Public Relations Center.
The money raised allowed the parish to replace the windows in the church and almost complete the renovation of the facade, which began in early spring.
St. Nicholas Cathedral is the oldest temple in Alchevsk. The original appearance of the temple, rebuilt in 1809, bore little resemblance to the current one – a small church with one altar. In 1899, side chapels were added to the main building: the right one – in honor of the icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow”, the left one – in honor of the holy prophet of God Elijah. By the beginning of the 20th century, there was a large temple complex here, which included houses for clergy and buildings where charitable assistance was provided to parishioners and all those in need. Until 1917, there was a parochial school at the church.
After the revolution, St. Nicholas Cathedral was looted and destroyed. In the 1930s there was a dairy factory here. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, when there were fierce battles in the Debaltsevo area, the temple was in the front-line zone, there was a hospital here. In 1942, after the occupation of Alchevsk by German troops, the church reopened and never closed again. The revival of the temple began in 1989.
