The first day of 2025 was marked by a dramatic event in Las Vegas. A Tesla Cybertruckparked in front of the entrance to the Trump International Hotel, caught fire and exploded, causing a tragedy that still leaves many questions unanswered. The accident caused the death of one person and the wounding of seven othersas reported by local authorities.
What happened in Las Vegas?
Second Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Police Department, the vehicle began emitting smoke before exploding. It is not yet clear what triggered the explosion, but investigations are ongoing and investigators are following various leads.
The police also stated that they were on alert for the possible presence of “secondary devices” in the area, but reassured the community by stating that at the moment there are no further threats. This event adds to another tragic episode that occurred the same morning in New Orleans, where a vehicle hit a crowd, causing at least 10 victims.
Elon MuskCEO of Tesla, quickly responded to the incident through a post on X. Musk claimed that the explosion was caused by “fireworks and/or an explosive device in the bed of the rented Cybertruck”. He added that Tesla’s entire senior team is conducting a thorough investigation to understand the origin of the accident.
“We have never seen anything like this,” Musk wrote, noting that the event represents a unique case in his company’s history.
Cybertruck problems in 2024
Il Cybertruckone of Tesla’s most anticipated vehicles, has faced numerous technical issues and recalls throughout 2024. In December alone, 700,000 units were recalled due to a flaw in the tire pressure warning system, which could lead to drivers driving on low-pressure tires without knowing it.
Other recalls included windshield wiper malfunctions, problems with the rear view camera display and anomalies with the accelerator pedal. These issues, while not directly linked to the Las Vegas explosion, highlight the difficulties Tesla is facing in ensuring full reliability of the Cybertruck.
The Cybertruck explosion in front of the Trump International Hotel attracted further media attention due to the closeness between Elon Musk and President-elect Donald Trump. Musk was a major supporter of Trump during the 2024 election, donating 277 million dollars for the election campaign and other Republican candidates.
This connection has raised speculation about possible political motivations behind the incident, but there is currently no concrete evidence linking the explosion to such dynamics.
