A tiny gadget led to the stolen Ferrari

Thanks to a pair of AirPods, it was possible to find a 2023 Ferrari 812 GTS, which was reported missing in the city of Waterbury (USA). The Ferrari, worth nearly HUF 205 million at the current exchange rate, was stolen from the city of Greenwich on September 16, but its owner was lucky that he left the device in the car, so he was able to track where his car was taken, writes the Road & Truck.

The authorities eventually linked a 22-year-old man to the theft of the Ferrari. The missing sports car was stolen from a civilian patrol car, but the perpetrator – who was identified as Dion Schontten – drove into the police car, which slightly damaged the Ferrari. The man then ran from the scene, but left his iPhone in the 812 GTS: several messages were found on the device, as well as a post shared on social media, which included pictures of the interior of the Ferrari.

The Ferrari 812 GTS was also previously tested by Vezess – the test can be read here:

Nevertheless, Schontten was arrested only ten days later, on September 26. By that time, he also impounded an Acura TLX from New York, also from last year, at which time his 18-year-old accomplice was also taken into police custody. The police he claimsthe two men took turns driving the stolen Acura, and in fact, the accomplice already had an arrest warrant after he drove an Audi A8.

Both are charged with car theft, but while this is Schontten’s second run-in with the law, his accomplice, who is four years younger than him, is on his seventh crime.

This is not the first car theft in which an Apple product played a key role in the solution: as Vezess reported a few months ago, the police were led to the trail by a cheap AirTag when a car stolen from Canada was found 11,000 kilometers away in Dubai.
