A touching gesture. Paris will honor the memory of the tragically deceased Olympic runner – Paris 2024 Olympics – Summer Olympics

The sports world mourns the death of Kenyan runner Rebecca Cheptegei on Thursday, who died as a result of an attack by her ex-boyfriend.

He doused Cehptegei with gasoline and set it on fire, causing burns on 75 percent of her body. Paris is preparing a touching gesture to honor the memory of the athlete.

The French metropolis, where the Kenyan woman started in the Olympic marathon this year, plans to name a sports field after the endurance athlete.

“Why? So that her memory and her story remain among us and help carry the message of equality, which is the message of the Olympic and Paralympic Games,” Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo told reporters.

In contrast to the events of the last few days, it is not important at all, but still: Cheptegei finished the Olympic marathon in 44th place. “She dazzled us. Paris will not forget her,” said the mayor.

The athlete was 33 years old and left behind two children. “We saw her. Her beauty, her strength and her freedom,” said Hidalgo. “In all likelihood, it was her beauty, strength and freedom that was unbearable for the person who committed the murder.”
