In Pskov Pechory, the iconostasis of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste is being saved from death. We employ highly qualified specialists from St. Petersburg and Pskov. They cover the elements of the royal gates with gold leaf.
The iconostasis was in disrepair, report in the organization “Revival of cultural heritage sites in the city of Pskov (Pskov region)”. Its wooden structures were damaged by fire, and wood-boring beetles also took their toll. In addition, in past decades, the iconostasis was repeatedly renovated using materials that were difficult to remove.
The iconostasis is wooden, two-tiered, in the form of a solid wall, with a pedestal and a finial. It contains two icons, which are placed on top of each other and completed with a carved “Crucifix”. All this is decorated with gilded carvings. It is mainly on the “Royal Doors”, columns, and icon frames.
The first tier of the iconostasis with the “Royal Doors” is most decorated. Above the north and south doors are carved heads of cherubs.
All this is covered with gold. At the same time, the remaining carved parts of the iconostasis are prepared for gilding – they are cleaned and covered with two layers of primer, enamel and varnish.
In 1540, the wooden Church of the Forty Martyrs was moved from the Pskov-Pechersky Monastery to the city of Pechory. By the end of the 18th century it had become very dilapidated. And then they decided to build a stone building. The church was erected in 1817. The bell tower was built in 1860. Large-scale restoration of the temple began in March of this year.
The church is named in honor of the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. These are Christian soldiers who accepted martyrdom for their faith in Christ in 320 under Emperor Licinius. They refused to participate in the pagan sacrifice. They were given a death sentence – they were stripped of their clothes and taken out into the cold. 40 warriors stood in the icy lake. They prayed and asked the Lord to strengthen them to carry out the feat to the end.
According to legend, Roman soldiers, seeing that the martyrs were not freezing, broke their legs and burned them. The charred bones of the martyrs were thrown into the water to prevent Christians from collecting them.
