Meteorology Anniina Valtonen has shared a very interesting fact about what causes the gray weather in Finland. The phenomenon is common at this time of year.
– November and December are the cloudiest months in Finland. Especially in the south, it has already been very gray day after day. In the middle of the day it has seemed like five o’clock in the afternoon, but at this time of year five o’clock is even darker. After a week, the day has shortened in the south by a total of half an hour and in the north by three quarters. Many are terribly disgusted by this greyness. Altostratus is responsible for the grayness of the season
– There is one reason for the grayness of this season, but there are two causes. The culprit is a cloud called Altostratus. Altostratus, or curtain cloud, covers the entire sky gray and thick in humid weather, and the sun cannot be seen through it.
Anniina has listed the southwest flow as the first cause of gray weather.

– In autumn, there is generally a mild and moist air flow from the south or southwest. The flow from the Atlantic cools on its way towards the Nordic countries, whereupon the moisture condenses into a huge sheet of clouds, or altostratus.
Another cause of gray weather is that the sun does not warm.

– In autumn and winter, the sun shines so low and for a short time that it does not warm much. After summer, there is a lot of moisture in the air in autumn. Cold air “holds” less moisture than warm air, so the excess moisture condenses into clouds. In this situation, altostratus.
– Sunshine and clear skies are exceptional in November.
– Altostratus is nothing without a drizzle, so let it rain love (like on a shirt). Grayness can also be wonderful, Anniina states.
